Natural recipes for garden success
Taking good care of your garden and keeping pests at bay doesn’t have to mean pouring a science experiment of chemicals over them. In fact, you may already have what you need to combat pests right in your kitchen.
Not only does organic gardening make good environmental sense, it also makes good economical sense. Just take a stroll down the aisles of your local gardening store and you’ll notice the high prices that go hand-in-hand with chemical treatments. Here are a few recipes to try on your plants:
Compost tea — This concoction adds important nutrients to the soil and the microorganisms in it make it effective for controlling pests and fungal disease. Fill a bucket half full of compost and fill the remainder of the bucket with water. Let this stand for 10-14 days, then use cheesecloth or pantyhose to drain out the liquid. Dilute using one part of the compost tea to 4-10 parts water. The finished product should have the color of iced tea. This mixture is useful for treating blight on tomatoes, black spot on roses and other fungal pests. Two tablespoons of blackstrap molasses can be added to help the spray adhere to plants.
Garlic spray — This spray is useful in repelling aphids, spider mites, white flies and other small insects. To make a concentrate, combine two bulbs of garlic with two hot peppers in a blender that is half full of water. Blend then strain the liquid from the mixture. Pour the liquid into a gallon jug and mix with water. Use ¼ cup of concentrate per gallon of water and spray on plants. A few drops of liquid soap can be added to the spray to help the mixture adhere to the plants.
Lime Spray — mix ¼ to ½ cup of agricultural lime with a gallon of water. This is an effective insecticide for mites and aphids. A small amount of liquid soap can also be added to help the spray adhere to plants. This mixture should be washed off plants within two days so as not to damage the plants. Overuse of this product can have an effect on soil pH.
