Bodybuilding championships all set

THE numbers are expected to be down but coach Stephen Robinson said he still anticipates that the Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation's National Championships will be a very competitive one.

The championships is scheduled for the Sheraton Nassau Beach resort, Cable Beach, on Saturday night.

On the heels of the Grand Bahama Bodybuilding Championships two weeks ago, Robinson said they are looking forward to a large field of competitors from Grand Bahama but the numbers from New Providence will be down.

"Unfortunately, a lot of the competitors have decided to sit out and take a break from the sport," said Robinson, who serves as the president of the New Providence Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships.

"But nonetheless, we still have a lot of bodybuilders who will be competing and trying to make the national team that will go to the Central American and Caribbean Bodybuilding Championships."

From the championships, Robinson said they are looking at selecting two national teams, the first to compete at the Antilles in August in Venezuela and the CAC Championships in El Salvador in September.

"Definitely, I know we will have a strong female team for those two games," he said. "But I don't think the men will be that strong with a lot of the top guys sitting out."

"We're still battling some internal problems, attitudes and perception and just trying to get everybody on one accord and taking the sport to the point where we used to be a contender."

Over the past three CAC Championships, Robinson said the Bahamas' performances have not been all that the federation anticipated and part of that is because of the fact that not all of the top bodybuilders competed.

Raymond Tucker, Lynden Fowler, Vincent Paul, Mark Dean, Lorraine LaFleur, Amy Sands and Dereka Kelly are among the list of competitors from New Providence.

Tammy Stubbs, Dominique Wilkinson, Charmaine McNabb and Andrew Sweeting are expected to head the field of competitors expected to come in to compete.

"When you look at it, a lot of guys that should be competing are not competing this year," Robinson stated.

"So with them not being there this year, it leaves the door wide open for anybody to win.

"I think we will still have a crowd and I think we will still have a good show.
