Body ID'd as former teacher

FITCHBURG  —  Her friends remember her as a dedicated, caring teacher.

When news spread that former Lancaster elementary school teacher Rae Ann Bonnevie was missing, those who knew and remembered her, hoped for the best.

Ms. Bonnevie, 57, had been missing for more than a month when police discovered a body in the woods June 8 on Westminster Hill Road not far from her home. Friends and family then suspected the worst. Yesterday, their fears were confirmed when officials announced the partially decomposed body, which was found by two surveyors, was Ms. Bonnevie.

Timothy Connolly, spokesman from Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.’s office, said Ms. Bonnevie was identified through dental records. Officials are still awaiting the autopsy report with the determination of the cause and manner of death, he said.

Ms. Bonnevie was reported missing May 8 by her live-in boyfriend, Kevin A. Goguen, 46, 100 Westminster Hill Road. Her brother was the last person to see her, on May 3 on Blossom Street. Family said she struggled with alcohol use and was ill.

“I have no comment,” said her mother, Mabel C. Zayka, from Livermore, Maine, yesterday. “It’s a bad day.”

Her best friend, Rebecca Watson of Fitchburg, said Ms. Bonnevie had a heart of gold.

“She was generous to a fault,” she said. “She would give when others took. She was a veteran teacher and loved children. She did everything she could for them.”

Jason G. Joyce, 38, of Sterling, was a student of Ms. Bonnevie’s as a child and also taught with her at the Mary Rowlandson Elementary School in Lancaster.

“As kids, everybody loved her,” Mr. Joyce said.

“I have vivid memories of all the kids every day lining up at the door as the buses came. All the kids would hug her. That is how everybody felt about her.”

He said that when teachers who remembered her found out she was missing, they were hoping it was a mistake.

“You hate to hear about that happening to anybody,” he said. “We were hoping it would be good news when they found her and it was all a mistake of some kind. Then, when they found the body in Fitchburg, everybody said they were suspecting it was her. A bunch of us who knew her and worked with her found out at 8 o’clock in the morning and had to teach the rest of the day.”

He said Ms. Bonnevie made him feel welcome when he was a young teacher starting out.
