Nearly 500 cars in Nostalgia Days event
ZION — Car lovers took a trip down memory lane Saturday as Zion held its annual car show and Sheridan Cruize.
Hundreds of vintage cars participated in the city’s Nostalgia Days event.
“We’ve got 487 cars. They came from all over the country — New Mexico, Oklahoma and Mississippi, to name a few,” said Julia Ramey, owner of an auto shop and an organizer of the event.
Sheridan Road in downtown was blocked off for the show as spectators lined the thoroughfare.
Joe Valerio, 57, of Joliet proudly displayed his robin-egg blue 1954 four-door Chevrolet Bel Aire which he said he bought with his $1 million Lotto winnings.
“I won the Lotto in February and bought the Chevy in March. I’ve always wanted a ‘54 Chevy because I was born in that year,” said Valerio, a member of the Viejitos Car Club, which celebrated its reunion the day before at the newly-opened Best Western Hotel just down the street.
Junior Rivera brought his shiny black 1938 four-door Chevrolet Master Deluxe from Albuquerque, N.M., for the show.
“I didn’t drive it here. I had it towed,” said Rivera.
“I spent a lot of time and money on it. Because of that, my wife and I have had a lot of arguments,” he said.
“But she’s with me all the way. In fact, she has been my inspiration,” he continued, adding, “I’ll never sell it. They don’t make cars like this any more,” he added.
George Gonzalez of Chicago brought his 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V painted candy green with metallic flakes. The hood features 24-karat gold stripes over graphics of water drops.
“This car means a lot to me because I’ve put a lot of time and work on it,” he said.
Dustin Lucy, 27, showed his 1967 Kaiser M35A2, a military truck he said he drives to work at Lucy Appliances. The truck burns a variety of fuels including vegetable oil.
“I’ve other vehicles, but this one gets more attention than a Ferrari,” he said.
Jim Holmes, 55, of Zion gave thumbs up to the festival. “This is the day people can come and celebrate together as a community. We need more days like this,” he said.
Amanda Green, munching on an ice cream bar with his fiancée, Kelly Davis, looking on, said, “We’re very happy. This is like a high school reunion.
