Most teens going into showbiz for the fame

Just like most of her peers, she wants to be famous because pursuing careers like becoming a teacher or a nurse are completely out of the equation despite the fact that she might never make it.

A new survey says that 89 per cent of Tanzania’s teens would rather enter showbiz because according to them it brings respect, glamour and money, too.

“Most of these teenagers have neither a certificate nor an education but are willing to work hard as a singer, actor or starring in reality TV,” says the survey.

Just like Aisha instead of applying for university, most teens are eager to feature in reality TV shows like “Big Brother Africa”, upload self-made music videos on eastafricantube.com or start practicing for practice for next season’s Tusker Project Fame.

Through the social media like Facebook and Twitter, they can afford to do their own publicity by uploading sexy photos on their walls.

“It is a way to employ yourself”, says19-year-old Cindy Rulz.

Cindy a student from Shaban Robert Secondary in Dar es Salaam, has got 1 572 followers on Twitter.

If you Google her you get 823 000 results including her video “Un Stoppable”, she is confident that one day she will make it big.“Being an artiste or a model is a job just like a teacher or a nurse. The industry requires creative, sharp and active people, something that fits very well with the youth,” she says.

However, as Cindy spends her efforts trying to make it big, she might have to work a little harder and with some luck on her side she might succeed. According to David Ngonyani aka DJ Dz from Dar es Salaam, despite the glamour and fame that is associated with showbiz; it is not an easy job as many young people think.

David started disc jockeying at 16 when he lived in Beijing, he has already worked with Kanye West during his “Glow in Dark Tour” in 2008 and set up “Step Up Player” on Clouds TV, he had a career before he finished high school.

“Most teens think being an entertainer is an easy job and enter the game for the wrong all the wrong reasons,” he says.

He adds that: I see many young people getting on the game to "kuuza sura", hoping that one day they will make it big and make quick bucks.

But as the young crave for the fame that showbiz brings, though it is slowly being accepted by the older generation it still has a bad reputation amongst the older folks.
