Shocking!
I think it's safe to say that my dog, Happy, has pretty poor impulse control. I keep telling people it's a bad rap, and that his training methods came right out of a famous book. Most folks claim that doesn't count since it was "The Dirt" by Motley Crue.
Happy does tend to jump on people, eat their snapdragons and, without warning, whiz on their front doors. Initially, he got away with this. But how many more terrible things can I keep telling the neighbors are on my dog's "To Do" list?
Aren't they going to become hip to this tissue of lies, eventually?
So, I thought I'd look up info about the E-Collar, that electronic neckband that is supposed to teach a dog to behave. It's apparently for incorrigibles, who, when off the leash, go nuts and jump on anything that moves. They're designing one right now for Anthony Weiner.
Now, as you may know, the E-Collar also goes by the name "Shock Collar," but they downplay that, understandably. It's the sort of name that brings to mind the exploitation pictures of the 40s. If you put a "Shock Collar" on your dog, how long can it be before he goes "Beserk" and ends up in "The Snake Pit?"
Still, the darn thing is pretty shocking.
Originally developed for hunting dogs, E-Collars are now used for everything from training your pup to acting as a GPS on him, should he get lost. The GPS thing does seem a little cruel to me. But then again, we've all used Mapquest. Anything would be an improvement.
These collars, apparently, can also be used as anti-theft devices — something I don't need for Happy, a lovely, destructive Golden who's been known to dig holes in peoples' yards and bury stuff he actually stole from them. If Hap was ever snatched, I think the whole thing would turn into an O'Henry-type hostage situation. Meaning the kidnappers would call and say they'd like to return my dog. Then ask how much money I wanted in exchange.
Still, there is the question of getting a naughty dog to behave a bit better.
According to the product information, an E-Collar can either be used to prevent bad behavior or reinforce good. In the "positive reinforcement" scenario, you can shock your dog just before he's about to do something bad. But how are you suppose to tell? This isn't baseball and your canine doesn't necessarily give signals. Like a 3rd base coach, telling a runner to steal by rubbing his arms, spitting and touching his cap.
