Enrollment falls at three state universities
->Registration is down this year at three universities in the school system of 14 state of Pennsylvania in higher education where tuition fees have increased by about 9 percent this fall in response to reductions in state subsidies .
Preliminary figures show enrollment is off 5 to 6 per cent to Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, a school north of Pennsylvania, in the fields of Marcellus shale gas. Clarion University of Pennsylvania, located about 75 miles north of Pittsburgh also provides an enrollment decline of 5 percent.
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, about 110 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, is to project an enrollment decline slightly after two years of record highs.
Mansfield spokesman Terry Day, said the combination of the weak economy and attracting high-wage jobs in the areas of gas are luring some local high school graduates away from Mansfield. The school had a staff of 3411 years past.
"At least that's what some of our consultants have heard in college fairs," Day said.
At Clarion, spokesman for the university Dave Love said preliminary figures suggest the inclusion of the school will be off 5 percent of the last 7315 years figure.
"Because of the economy and other financial problems, we realize this is a very difficult time for many of our students and their families. Recognizing this, we work one-on-one with students to do what we can get them enrolled this fall, "said spokesman Dave Clarion Love.
Edinboro spokesman Jeff Pinsky said that the school had an enrollment record of 8642 years past, expects a slight decline - "maybe a few hundred students" - once the final numbers are counted .
Although projections for every school system is not available on Thursday, at least one school provides for increases in enrollment. Indiana University of Pennsylvania officials believe enrollment this fall is expected to exceed last 15,126 years registration record, said spokeswoman Michelle Fryling school.
And officials say they believe that the 14-school system after an overall increase in enrollment."But we will not know how much until the official number to come in September," said the spokesman Kenn Marshall system.

The impetus behind Dr.New enthusiasm for painting on springs Jobb slate of his desire to create a gift for a friend and became a reality when he got the idea to paint his farm on a piece of slate. The painting was a success and the idea of creating a series of images of local slate was born.

He taught in the Department of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania Clarion until his retirement in early 1991.
