Porsche's Cayenne Oozes Quality As Hybrid SUV
Caveat: I do not like the vast majority of sport utility vehicles because they are not what they intend to be, sporting and filled with utility. And hybrids? So heavy, so complicated, so computerized.
Yet I’ve got a soft spot for the 2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid. Redesigned for model year 2011, the Porsche Cayenne — in all guises — looks smaller than it actually is, thanks to the lowered nose and the steeply raked final pillar. It’s actually a bit larger in all dimensions, so this is a nice optical illusion.
The all-wheel-drive Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid stands 190.8 inches long, 76.3 inches wide, and 67.4 inches tall on a 114-inch wheelbase. It’s got 8.7 inches of ground clearance that can be changed on a lever behind the shifter and it’s meant to tow more than 7,500 pounds. The curb weight is a 4,938 pounds.
Power comes from an Audi-sourced direct injection 3-liter V6 paired with a supercharger. The engine makes 333 horsepower and an electric motor has 47 horsepower for a total of 380 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, more than enough to get this machine underway and over the road. Total torque is 427 pound-feet at 1,000 rpm.
Porsche fits its terrific 8-speed Tiptronic transmission that is shiftable in two ways: on the floor or through dual paddle shifters on either side of the steering wheel. For reference, up-shifts are accomplished on the front; downshifts on the rear of the steering wheel. It all works handsomely and, for point of reference to this car’s excellent gearing, 70 mph comes at a pinch under 1.800 rpm in eighth gear.
Double wishbone and multilink front and rear suspensions can be set for comfort, normal and sport conditions; I never left the sport setting. There are front and rear stabilizer bars that help keep the machine planted. Turning circle is 39.1 feet. The fabulous brakes feature vented rotors front and rear and the power rack-and-pinion steering is weighted well and as you’d expect. Porsche fits an electro-hydraulic on the Cayenne S Hybrid that is speed sensitive. It’s extremely direct on-center.
The way the accessible nickel metal hydride battery system (under the floor at the hatch opening) works in concert with the engine on this car is so seamless as to be unnoticeable. The Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid features a start/stop function that also works when the car is coasting — adding to the Cayenne’s stated fuel mileage of 20/24-mpg from the 22.4-gallon tank. Premium unleaded is required and, once my week was complete with mostly in-town 235 miles, 325 miles range remained. I’m sure the Cayenne S Hybrid can go way farther over the road.
