Southwest Pasadena, Arroyo Seco top statewide LGBT population maps
PASADENA - According to statewide data maps of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) and LGBT-friendly California residents, Pasadena ranks among the most densely populated areas in California.The Sacramento-based organization Equality California recently presented the maps - created by Redistricting Partners - to the California Citizens Redistricting Community at a public hearing in Sacramento.
The non-profit advocacy organization is hoping the commission will recognize LGBT communities of interest as they finalize draft maps for a variety of statewide political districts later this summer.
"Thank you for taking an otherwise invisible community and making them visible," Commissioner Cynthia Dai said after Redistricting Partners presented the maps on Tuesday.
"I was surprised that there was an LGBT community in the Arroyo Seco and southwestern Pasadena area, but several of my friends in the LGBT community have said that this is an emerging area," Paul Mitchell, founder of Redistricting Partners said.
Mitchell has lived in Pasadena both prior to and after the revitalization of old town.
Mitchell said it's apparent that more and more gay couples are moving to Pasadena.
Mitchell drew on multiple datasets - including from individual organizations, the Secretary of State and the US Census - to create the maps, which include communities in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, Long Beach, San Diego and Los Angeles.
Donors to LGBT organizations, "No" on Prop 22 and Prop 8 campaigns, as well as people listed in the Secretary of State's Domestic Partners Database and same sex households from the U.S. Census, helped define communities of interest.
In the maps, nearly the entire Arroyo Seco and a solid Western and Southern chunk of Pasadena are colored orange, representing a 90th to 95th percentile rank of the "LGBT blend" of datasets.
By way of comparison, West Hollywood is 95th percentile and above.
Mitchell said the Commission has been very open to identifying communities of interest outside those in the Census - including by factors like work patterns, hillside communities, transportation, urban rural and other socioeconomic measures.

The 14 members of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission this week finished a series of meetings designed to gather public comment about the first draft of new maps to govern our political representation. The maps mean some changes for who will represent the Pocket and Greenhaven neighborhoods.
Tuesday evening at the State Capitol nine of the Commission members presided over a three-hour hearing to gather public comment about the proposed changes to California’s political borders.
According to the Commission’s mission statement, commissioners are trying to design districts that “respect the boundaries of cities, counties, neighborhoods and communities of Interest, and minimize their division, to the extent possible.” For our neighborhood that means an Assembly district that separates the Pocket area and south Sacramento from the rest of the city and now includes Elk Grove and an area all the way to the county border.
