Monte's view: Definition of family changes as does baseball

Don Imus, whom I was watching on TV one morning last week, posed the question: “Don’t you think all families are dysfunctional?”

At the risk of echoing Bill Clinton, it depends on how one defines “dysfunctional.”

The norm has certainly changed in the two generations separating mine from the current one. Not as many children have a mother at home. Few have maids to fill in the gaps when Mom is occupied. Economic necessity has put as many women in the workplace as desire for equal rights and responsibilities.

Not as many children have stable family units. Divorce and infidelity have rumbled through family units with the same intensity as an earthquake.

Sitting in a waiting room waiting for oil to be changed and tires to be rotated, I had a conversation with a woman about her grandchildren.

“My daughter has three boys,” she said. “When Evan, the oldest, was born, he was her first and she lavished attention on him. Then Justin came along, and she started losing interest. The youngest, Alan, hardly got any attention at all. Now Evan is gone, off making a career for himself, and Justin is still at home, but working, and she still takes some interest in him. But poor Alan is the sweetest kid of the three, and all he gets for it is her yelling at him any time anything goes wrong.

“Alan, I think, just does anything he can do to avoid trouble. He just goes back in his room and plays with his video games.”

Here’s hoping Imus is wrong. Here’s hoping there are stable, loving families out there, doing more than putting up a front. They’re on the wane, though. The strain is unbearable. The earthquake is inevitable.

Let the record note that my family was a far cry from the Nelsons in “Ozzie and Harriet” and the Cleavers in “Leave It To Beaver.” Maybe we were ahead of our time.

It’s my observation that kids aren’t as self-reliant. I had to learn to think on my feet, if for no reason other than to keep my demanding, hysterical father at bay. Very little ever seemed to please him.

But I rode my bicycle all over town and occasionally even rode it to the next one. I showed up at the ball field in the mill village and played pickup baseball games until the sun went down and nearby mamas started yelling that supper was ready.

In one sense, order has broken down, and in another, everything seems too supervised.
