7/3 FLORIDA BRIEFS: Scott supports new campgrounds in state parks

ST. PETERSBURG -- Gov. Rick Scott says he supports the idea of adding new campgrounds in more than 50 Florida state parks, even though some members of his own party don’t agree.

Scott said Friday in St. Petersburg that adding amenities such as RV camping will make people want to use the state’s parks even more.

The idea has come under fire by some Republican lawmakers and others opposed to campgrounds at the pristine Honeymoon Island State Park in the Tampa Bay area and others that do not presently offer camping.

Plane returns to gate because of suspicious note

TAMPA -- A Southwest Airlines plane headed for Alabama returned to its gate at Tampa International Airport before takeoff after a suspicious note was found.

The Transportation Security Administration reports that the note was found Friday evening on Flight 1178 to Birmingham. Passengers were taken back to their departure gate for a security rescreening, but the TSA says nothing was immediately found that raised a concern.

The TSA wasn’t revealing the contents of the note or what made it suspicious.

Teen charged in fatal graduation party shooting

KISSIMMEE -- The killing of Rashan Hasaun Ortiz and wounding of three others at a huge Osceola High School graduation party in early June led to the indictment Wednesday of Joshua Harris, 17, on seven felony charges, according to the Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office.

In Ortiz’s death, Harris faces a single count of first-degree murder with a firearm. Ortiz, 22, was gunned down June 5 in a crowd of about 600 guests when Harris opened fire with a 9 mm pistol. Some residents blamed the killing on gang violence but police disagreed, saying the violence followed a still undisclosed dispute between Harris and Ortiz.

For the wounding of three party guests, Harris also faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm and three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm causing great bodily harm.

Harris, who lives in Kissimmee, remains in the state Juvenile Detention Center in Orlando.

At least five people injured in S. Florida bus crash

WEST PALM BEACH -- Authorities say at least five people were injured in a crash involving South Florida public bus.

Officials say the Palm Tran bus was rear-ended Friday evening. Five bus passengers were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. It wasn’t clear if anyone in the other vehicle was injured.

Troopers said the school bus and two other vehicles were traveling westbound on Boggy Creek Road.

FHP officials said the bus driver, 30-year-old Yanaira Pagan, ran into an Acura, driven by 52-year-old Sandra Beatty, who said she stopped for a vehicle in front of her that was waiting to make a left turn.

She said she stopped behind the van, driven by 40-year-old Iris Mercedes. Troopers said the bus driver was unable to stop and struck the rear of the Acura, pushing it into the back of the van.

Beatty had to be cut out of the car, FHP said, she was transported to Osceola Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

Troopers said two female students were on the school bus but were not injured. They also said Pagan and Mercedes are both OK.

Boggy Creek Road near Bill Beck Boulevard in Kissimmee was blocked, but the lanes have since reopened.

Troopers said the bus driver was cited for careless driving.
