After over half a century, Sale Barn to be razed

The 1959 opening of a livestock auction house was a big deal for Bloomington — today’s equivalent of Walmart coming to a small town, as the original owner’s son puts it.

Hundreds of people from all over Central Illinois came for opening night at the Bloomington Livestock Commission Co., also called the Sale Barn. At a time when livestock was a much bigger part of McLean County’s agriculture economy than it is today, an auctioneer would wheel and deal cattle, hogs and sheep every Wednesday.

“It was the nicest, cleanest sale barn in the state. I guarantee you, you could eat off the floor,” said Steve Kindred, now 62, whose late parents, Harold and Nellie Kindred, built the auction house and ran it until 1988.

For the past 20 years, the local landmark at 2019 S. Main St. has played a different role, as home to countless community events such as arts festivals and gun shows. But that’s coming to an end soon, too, after the current owners, the Shirk family, announced this spring plans to close the Sale Barn on Friday and demolish it.

The property’s future is unclear, but Steve Kindred is sad to see the Sale Barn go. It was a family affair, he said. His dad — nicknamed “colonel,” like many auctioneers — stood at the auction block in his trademark Western-style hat as his son worked the animals in the ring below. Nellie Kindred ran the adjacent restaurant. Her brother, Bill Thompson, was the colonel’s right-hand man in the barn.

“It was like going to a circus,” said Steve Kindred, who joined his dad as an auctioneer after getting out of the Army in 1971. “There was never a dull moment when there was an auction going on.”

In a letter sent to stakeholders, the Shirk family said the Sale Barn was closing in part because it was starting to show its age, and the cost of upgrades was too high. They also said recent upgrades to the Main Street and Hamilton Road intersection and adjacent walking trail had “compromised” access to the Sale Barn.

The Shirks wrote that the final date for activities at the Sale Barn would be Thursday; it’s unclear when it will be demolished. Several attempts to reach the Shirks this week were not successful.

Kindred said he was happy the Sale Barn lived on as a multipurpose event facility after his father died in 1988 and his mother sold it to the Shirks. She died in 2005.

One of those events was the Spring Bloom Arts Festival, a showcase for 100 artists featuring a juried show hosted by the McLean County Arts Center.
