LSU gets a solid C

Alleva, though, soon found himself dealing with an underachieving football program for a brief spell in 2008 and 2009, a men's basketball team that bottomed out this past season for the second straight year after a breakthrough 2009 campaign and a women's basketball program that gradually became average after five straight Final Fours. The baseball team also finds itself mired in mediocrity in its post-national championship period, finishing eighth in the SEC in 2010 and ninth in 2011 season — only after late runs. The Tigers have not hosted a NCAA postseason game since 2009. Baseball coach Paul Mainieri made a key coaching change after last season, letting pitching coach/recruiting coordinator David Grewe go and replacing him with veteran minor league pitching coach Alan Dunn. The Tigers may have one of the best and youngest pitching staffs in the SEC next season. More offense will be needed, though, to return LSU to elite status.

LSU fans had to look to the non-revenue sports for the best season of 2010-11 other than football. Freshman Austin Ernst of Seneca, S.C., became the first women's golfer in history to win the NCAA individual national championship and first LSU golfer — man or woman — since Fred Haas Jr. in 1937 to win the title. Coach Karen Bahnsen's women's team also finished third in the nation — the highest finish in the history of the program — while also garnering a 993 score out of a possible 1,000 in the Academic Progress Report (APR) grades. The next four years appear ready to start off in grand fashion, though, as the football team is expected to make a national championship run in 2011. LSU, which returns most of an 11-2 team from 2010, has already been picked No. 1 in the nation by The Sporting News going into this season. And the next national championship game is in New Orleans, where LSU has won the last two in 2003 and 2007. The Tigers appear to be back on track as an elite program after their best season in 2010 since winning the BCS national title in the 2007 season. The fact is, though, that LSU is void of any championships since winning the SEC West, SEC overall and national titles in 2007. LSU had back-to-back underachieving seasons in 2008 and 2009, going a collective 17-9 overall and pedestrian 8-8 in the SEC after entering each season in the top 10.
