Man killed during Lindsay drug raid was turning life around

TORONTO — Mourners at a Thursday funeral for a young Scarborough man killed during a police raid on a suspected Lindsay drug den heard how he wanted to eventually return to high school and go to college.

Around 80 friends and family gathered at a funeral home in the Kingston Rd. and Lawrence Ave. E. area to honour Cory Aaron Armstrong, 21, who was fatally shot on June 22 during a police bust on a suspected crack house in Lindsay.

Injured in what turned into a shootout inside the Georgian St. house was Peterborough police Const. Keith Calderwood, who has since been released from hospital.

Police seized crack cocaine and marijuana from the residence, and at least two people are charged with drug-related offences.

During Thursday's service — attended by a mix of people in suits, young men with cornrow hairstyles, faux designer sunglasses and tattoos, and young women in tight, black skirts — mourners heard from several of Armstrong's friends and family. Armstrong's Uncle Bentley spoke of "choices" Armstrong made in his life — both good and bad — and the choices that ultimately led to Thursday's funeral.

"A collection of choices led to these circumstances," he said, stopping numerous times to collect himself.

Armstrong's aunt Denise said her nephew wanted to ultimately study culinary arts at college, and his grandmother, Cheryl DeCosta, said "he was not a threat to anyone."

A friend with sunglasses perched on his head read a eulogy from a BlackBerry. He spoke of a group of Armstrong's comrades gathering shortly after they learned of his death. Together, they visited all the spots they'd go with Armstrong to hang out. "Until the cops showed up...the bastards," he said, inciting laughter from the pews.

Beside him sat a modest, brown coffin adorned with red roses. To the left, a large photo of Armstrong with a smiling, youthful face.

Outside, a Toronto police cruiser sat in the funeral home's driveway. Another one idled across the street.

As Armstrong's coffin was carried out to the hearse, several of Armstrong's friends held up their middle fingers to reporters and photographers, with one shouting that Armstrong's funeral was a "private" affair.

The province's Special Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate the shootout and revealed last week that one of the two gunshot wounds suffered by Calderwood was from a police bullet.
