Woman arrested for hit-skip that killed 9-year-old boy
A Cleveland woman was arrested after turning herself in early this morning in connection with a hit-skip accident Friday on West 98th Street that killed a 9-year-old boy.
Police said she surrendered to Second District officers at approximately 1:35 a.m. and was arrested for aggravated vehicular homicide and leaving the scene. Her 2000 Chevrolet Blazer was impounded as evidence.
A preliminary report said the boy, Miguel Reed-Torres, was chasing another child riding a bicycle when when he ran from in front of a parked car and he was hit and killed by a red Blazer.
Police said the driver stopped, prayed over the boy, then left in her vehicle.
A previous version of this story named the driver. It is Plain Dealer policy not to name suspects before they are charged. According to this article she stopped, got out of the car, prayed over the body, then got back in and sped off. By virtue of her stopping and knowing the child was seriously injured and doing nothing, she instantly changed her violation from hit and run to aggravated homicide. She was responsible for the injuries, knew the boy was injured, and did nothing. Had she continue on without stopping, she MAY have been able to argue hit and run. As in "I didn't know he was injured".
I have to say, that based on what the article says, I can't imagine vehicular homicide! Yes, hit-skp and a hefty sentence for that considering it involved the life of a person and worse a child. She should have stayed for help to come and told officers what happened. BUT it could be that they feel it involved alcohol or excessive speed..but still, I was a child who ran in front of a car when I was young..the poor woman felt awful and she was going slow so I survived thank God but you just can't know if a child is going to dart out in front of a car, especially from behind a large vehicle! I hope for this girl's sake these charges don't hold because she is going to suffer for the rest of her life because a child ran in front of her...she didn't swerve off the road and hit him. I feel very bad for the family of the boy and also for this young woman who's life is also effectively over.
Two lives now lost...for what appears to be an accident...if it was just a hit a run...then throw the book at her.
But since she stopped, prayed, then fled...I don't see her as an animal...but a young woman who was afraid....if she was drunk or a criminal...I don't think she would have stopped.

Hey hey, well Seeing as we now have the Suburban and a bigger trailer we don't need two SUV's. So, we're selling the Blazer.
