Florence M. Grine
Florence M. Grine, 84, formerly of 152 E. Perry St., Tiffin, died July 1, 2011, at Elmwood at the Shawhan in Tiffin.
Florence was born April 21, 1927, to Murray J. and Ethel C. (Kingseed) Grine. She is survived by a sister, Edna Watson, of Old Fort, and was preceded in death by her parents. Florence never married and dedicated her life to teaching.
Florence attended schools in New Riegel, Alvada, and McCutchenville, and graduated from McCutchenville High School. She went to Bowling Green State University, and joined the Methodist Church and its Kappa Phi Sorority. Florence also enrolled in Delta Pi Epsilon, an honors sorority of which she was a charter member. Florence's other activities included Future Teachers of America and Future Business Leaders of America.
Florence graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1949, majoring in Business Education. She returned to McCutchenville to teach for two years at the high school, then went to Fostoria Schools as their business teacher for nine years. She taught shorthand, typing, accounting, bookkeeping and related office skills. She also advised the National Honor Society. After her fifth year of teaching, she was invited to join Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
Florence was then hired at the new Tiffin Columbian High School, where she taught all the business classes. She started a course in business law, and taught summer school every summer. Florence earned credits for graduate hours at Bowling Green. She took summer classes and earned her master's degree in 1967.
Florence helped with Columbian's prom and magazine campaigns. In later years, she helped with counseling. Florence retired in 1990 after 41 years as a teacher. Thirty of those years were at Tiffin Columbian.
As a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International since 1956, Florence served as their state president from 1989 to 1991. She served in all the offices at the local and state level, and remained an active member. Florence was the 2002 Seneca Heritage Parade Marshal for Tiffin, and was secretary for the Seneca Council of Churches for several years. A member of First Presbyterian Church and its Women's Society, she taught Sunday school classes for a few years at the YMCA. She also served 14 years as volunteer treasurer for the church's building fund.
She was a member of Daughters of America, American Association of University Women, Tiffin Business and Professional Women and Ohio Business Teacher Association.
