Students sell animals at fair's livestock auction

— “Watch out, pig coming through!” 9-year-old Madison Causey yelled at the top of her lungs Saturday as her Hampshire pig stomped toward a pen in the swine-filled barn.

Madison had just sold her 299-pound pig for $897, or $3 per pound, at the annual Junior Livestock Auction at the San Diego County Fair. Madison, who is entering fourth grade at Fallbrook’s Live Oak Elementary, raised the pig from 70 pounds over the past three months to get it market-ready in time for the sale.

The auction was a culmination for Madison and hundreds of other students between the ages of 9 and 18, who enrolled in agricultural organizations like 4-H and Future Farmers of America to learn hands-on how to raise livestock correctly.

They buy their animals at a young age, feeding, bathing and exercising them over roughly three months. The goal? To grow the animal enough so it can be sold for human consumption, which is what happened Saturday. Many will go to the slaughterhouse Tuesday.

“You can’t get too attached, but we give them a much better life here than they would have had,” said John Wheelock, 16, a junior at San Pasqual High School, who sold his 214-pound pig, Pretty Girl, for $535. The animal was 40 pounds when Wheelock got her.

Many of the students even lived at the fairgrounds this past week to ensure their animals, housed in the barn, remained in prime shape leading up to the sale.

“It’s a big commitment to be willing to do this,” said Sarah Scrape, 14, who grew her Yorkshire pig, Skids, from 77 pounds when she got her three months ago to 230 pounds. Sarah sold Skids for $805 dollars, or $3.50 a pound, and plans to use the money for college.

In all, 98 steers, 200 sheep, 275 pigs, and 75 goats were displayed to several hundred bidders in picnic tables outside the fairgrounds barn, said coordinator Jaime Mendoza. Auctioneers in ten-gallon hats called out prices per pound as an animal would pace in a viewing area just in front of the crowd.

Many choose to buy animals at the fair because the students’ technically sound work translates to better meat, said Deb Beckett, who bought Skids on Saturday. Skids will likely be able to produce 115 pounds of meat, half her body weight.

“We cry. There’s always tears on our last day at the fair,” said Beckett, whose daughter, Alex, was selling a steer at the auction. “If you’re going to eat meat, you need to understand, this is the way it works.
