Strickland's going on four generations of food and memories

For several decades, Strickland's held that corner of real estate in downtown Athens. But when the restaurant moved west to Bogart in 1995, many customers followed.

A lot remains the same at the Bogart location.

The biscuits still are wide and soft, the cobblers still are made in the kitchen, and a Strickland still runs the place.

Actually, three generations of them do.

"It's going to be four generations soon," Mike Strickland said with his son, Michael, in earshot.

Michael and his wife are expecting their first child in February.

"Essie Strickland started it out in 1960, and my dad (Paul Strickland) took it over in '75," Mike Strickland said. "He still comes in and works -- well, he calls it work -- one day a week."

Mike and Paul Strickland are just a few characters who fill the scene in the mornings at the modest diner. A regular cast of characters sits around the same table every morning and tells stories. Most of the stories aren't true.

"This right here is the 'Liar's Table,'" said Ray Hanson, 70, an elder of the table who still makes his living as a locksmith. "This is a breakfast table for a bunch of old geezers.

"We enjoy the camaraderie and the fellowship -- plus, we get the best breakfast in town."

Strickland's takes its breakfast as seriously as its meat 'n' three lunches. The homemade biscuits that Michelle Bellew bakes up can be filled with eggs, bacon, sausage, a whole chicken breast, steak, cheese and red-eye gravy. All of that also is prepared on site, Bellew points out.

She is the lone holder now of the biscuit and dessert recipes. And she's not giving away any hints on how to re-create them.

"That's the best kept secret in the Classic City," she said.

"And I'm keeping them. I ain't telling nobody."

The breakfast is predictable, but the lunch meats and vegetables change daily. Strickland's serves up four proteins and at least eight fixings daily in a true cafeteria format.

But unlike most cafeterias, Strickland's has a pitcher of sweet tea ready on every table to take the edge off the summer heat. It's the perfect nectar for the regulars who come to Strickland's every day.

"You've got builders, CPAs, bankers, farmers, fishermen," Strickland said. "And they're all sitting there telling stories."

Last week, Hanson insisted that he was a relative of the first president of the United States -- and that wasn't George Washington, by the way.

Red Eye Gravy is well known in the South, but little known in the rest of the United States. Also called bird eye gravy, poor man’s gravy, red ham gravy, and muddy gravy, it is made from ham drippings and black coffee. The history of red eye gravy is rife with culinary lore.

So the legend goes: Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States, called for his cook to tell him what to prepare for the morning meal. The cook had been drinking “moonshine” the night before and his eyes were rimmed in red. Taking a look at those bloody red eyes, General Jackson instructed the cook to bring him some country ham with gravy as red as his eyes. The conversation was overheard by others and from then on, ham gravy became “Red Eye Gravy.”

Some people say Red Eye Gravy’s name comes from its distinct appearance. Prepared traditionally, when coffee and grease are combined in the final step the coffee and grease form a heterogeneous mixture, with the water based coffee sinking to the bottom and the oil based grease forming the top layer. In a round bowl, therefore, the mixture looks much like a red human eye

My family’s practice is to dip the inner sides of a split biscuit into the gravy in order to add flavor and keep the biscuit from being too dry when a piece of country ham is added between the two halves.
