Padres prospect receives 50-game drug suspension
Outfielder Donavan Tate, who began the year with the TinCaps and is with San Diegos short-season A team in Eugene, Ore., was suspended for 50 games for violating Major League Baseballs drug prevention and treatment program, MLB announced Tuesday.
Tate, the No. 3 overall pick in 2009, tested positive a second time for a drug of abuse. Drugs of abuse are defined as recreational and not performance-enhancing, The Sporting News reported. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Tate failed the test while in Fort Wayne.
Tate will be given credit for 25 games already served while undergoing substance abuse counseling. The 25 games that remain will be served effective immediately.
Tate suffered a deep bone bruise in his left knee after colliding with teammate Everett Williams while chasing a fly ball in an April 12 TinCaps game at Bowling Green. He went to the disabled list, and was activated June 17.
When he was in Arizona attending to the knee, part of that time was spent in a program, said Padres assistant general manager Jason McLeod told the Union-Tribune.
Were doing everything we can to get Donavan all the help he needs, just like we would with any player.
Tate was sent to Eugene to get a few at-bats and was scheduled to return to Fort Wayne before the end of the month, San Diego director of player development Randy Smith told The Journal Gazette two weeks ago.
Tate, who received a reported $6.25 million signing bonus, had a .316 average in his six games with the TinCaps.
He had six hits in 19 at-bats.
The TinCaps lost to Lake County 13-3 Tuesday at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio. The Captains scored 10 runs in the third inning.
Fort Wayne starting pitcher Keyvius Sampson gave up seven runs on three hits in two innings. He walked four batters, all in the third inning. He walked the bases loaded to begin the inning and then threw a wild pitch, plating the first of the 10 runs.
Reliever Chase Marona surrendered five runs on three hits in one inning.
Five Captains (4-1, 32-42 overall) had at least two RBI. Jesus Aguilar hit his 14th home run of the season.
B.J. Guinn had two hits and two RBI for the TinCaps (1-4, 31-43).
