Bondy: For U.S. men at Wimby, go Fish

WIMBLEDON - It isn't easy being a male American tennis player at Wimbledon, or even finding one. The ghosts of golden generations past hover disapprovingly, grumping from the broadcast booths. The Dynastic Duo of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer loom as dead ends in the brackets, as do Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. In the interview rooms, the questions are always about why there are no more McEnroes or Agassis.

The first week came to an end Saturday with a thud and now Mardy Fish, the game journeyman, is the lone flag bearer in the singles draw.

"Same as the French (Open), right?" Fish said. "It's lonely. It doesn't feel great. That's not the goal. I want the guys here, so that's a bit of a bummer."

Andy Roddick was eliminated on Friday by Feliciano Lopez, just as his brackets were opening hospitably. Alex Bogomolov Jr. took the court Saturday already down two sets and a break to Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in a suspended match, so even Bogomolov knew how that would end.

"It was just as relaxing as it can be," Bogomolov said. "Nobody at the house last night spoke about the match. There was no desperation, nothing like that. Just an easy night."

Then he went out and finished losing, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3.

That left only Fish, stuck on tiny Court 14, where not even Serena Williams has ever found herself exiled for bad behavior. This is a court so inconveniently located that Fish could hear Brad Gilbert yelling down to Patrick McEnroe and that the chair umpire was forced to scold a loud observer in the overhead press cafeteria.

"It's a pretty noisy place, you almost can't breathe a little bit," Fish said. "It's sort of an uncomfortable court to play at."

Fish survived this claustrophobic atmosphere for an unpleasant victory, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 1-1, ret., over a halfhearted Dutch opponent, Robin Haase. Fish went 0-for-10 in break-point chances during the second set, lost a marathon 11th game and then the tiebreaker. He sparred with the chair umpire about time violations, tried to find some shade on the shadeless court.

Still, he didn't lose his serve once and eventually Haase simply quit without calling out a trainer. It's tough to criticize anybody without knowing how he really feels, but Haase sounded very ambivalent about this whole match.
