After the excitable crowds on the Memorial Union Terrace marvel at Madison's annual Rhythm & Booms fireworks display taking place across the lake at Warner Park on Saturday, July 2, they'll be greeted by an unlikely sight in Bill Callahan.
The introspective singer-songwriter is not the first performer who comes to mind when one thinks of a headliner for a day-long party capped by thunderous fireworks. It's a list that would probably read something like this: 1. Kid Rock, 2. Black-Eyed Peas, 3. Bob Seger ... 1,456,340. Bill Callahan.
Callahan, who recorded as Smog until dropping the moniker in favor of his birth name in 2007, tends toward a much quieter sound, frequently singing in a distinctive baritone that comes across like a father relaying lessons from a life hard-lived.
Keeping all of this in mind, the 45-year-old Maryland-born musician arrives in town prepared for the worst.
"People are telling me it's going to be awful!" he wrote in a recent email exchange. "Don't worry. I'm prepared for a large body of aggressively disinterested people."
For years, Callahan showed a similar disinterest in being in the spotlight. Though he released his debut, "Sewn to the Sky," in 1990, it wasn't until his ninth album, 2001's "Rain on Lens," that he even included his own photograph on the record sleeve. Furthermore, the singer often treated interviews the way a prisoner of war might treat a military interrogation, offering up so little information that some journalists began referring to him as "The Wall."
"A lot of the things I read about him, and even in the way he is when you see him, it's not about, ‘Look at me!' " said Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne, who covered Callahan's "Chosen One" in concert with his bandmates. "It's more like, ‘I'm just a dude who does my thing.' He doesn't come at it from being a professional musician, he just comes at it from being a weirdo who wants to do his trip."
In that sense, Smog proved a perfect stage name for a performer seeking to camouflage himself. Callahan never thought of it in those terms, however, saying he innocently picked the moniker a couple of years before he recorded a song.
"I think I just liked the sound of the word," he said. "I was a kid. It's like liking Garbage Pail Kids or Wacky Packages. Just kind of a gnarly image."
Letting go of Smog
Asked why he chose to record under his own name four years ago, the singer offered a simple response, saying, "I'm absolved of expectations, absolved of history. I can just be. I can just play.
