Reinterpretation of Paris Proposal / Daniel and Maximilian Zielinski

Brothers Daniel and Maximilian Zielinski shared with us their winning proposal for the modernization of Paris in the Living City Design Competition . Organized by the International Living Future Institute, in partnership with The National Trust for Historic Preservation, Daniel and Max were given the challenge to visualize the transformation of existing towns in cities of the future by translating the highest standards of ecological fund included in the Living Building Challenge 2.0. Desired solutions were possible with existing technologies that could be applied in the near future. As a competition open to all, more than 80 teams addressing 69 cities from 21 countries submitted their ideas for the contest. More images and project description after the break.

The jury was impressed with our ability to combine a deep respect for the City of Light’s rich history and culture, with a pragmatism that could be implemented in myriad contexts. The jury noted: “Daniel and Maximilian crafted an elegant interplay of design solutions with very real-world strategies. It achieved the end goal in a way that welcomed and incorporated the present, and instead of simply showing how the ‘natural world’ might colonize urban environments, it created fertile ground for people thriving in partnership with nature.”

Starting from the fundamental question, namely why the man is the only creature who destroys the environment in which they live. Why? Answers are many: indifference, lack of education, ignorance, makes the human the planet’s greatest natural enemy. Man has not yet learned or has forgotten how to live in harmony with nature. Therefore we believe the actual key to a sustainable future starts with environmental education. The environment describes best the degree of civilization of the society in which we live. Therefore, to make good nature involves making a better society and better individuals. The future depends on us!

In 1900, only 13% of the world’s population lived in cities. By 2050, that number will have risen to 70%. As the population grows fast, the demands on the city infrastructures such as transportation, healthcare, education and public safety will increase significantly. Public demands that need to be pursued are a better education, greener programs, accessible government, affordable housing and more options for senior citizens.

Cities must use new technologies in order to eliminate the use of finite resources. Buildings account for a large amount of land use, energy and water consumption, air and atmosphere alteration. The building sector accounts for 30-40% of global energy use. Over 80% of the environmentally harmful emissions from buildings are due to energy consumption during the times when the buildings are in use. The heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, the lights and the water: all contribute to making buildings a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions and a leading energy user. New buildings should bring a vast array of practices and techniques together to eliminate their impacts on the environment and human health. While the practices, or technologies, employed in buildings are constantly evolving, there are fundamental principles that should be pursued when designing a building: design efficiency, energy efficiency, water efficiency, materials efficiency, indoor quality, operations and maintenance optimization and waste and toxics reduction.
