DOE Veteran Who Helped Shape Admissions Office Retires

A DOE administrator who helped centralize the city's high school admissions process has retired after spending nearly four decades working with students. NY1's Jeanine Ramirez filed the following report.

Elizabeth Sciabarra was surrounded by family, friends and colleagues last month as she said goodbye to a 37 year career with the Department of Education. She started out teaching English in the 1970's and finished up overseeing student admissions citywide from pre-K through 12th grade as the CEO of the Office of Student Enrollment.

"I think it was more important rather than title for people just understand I knew that the buck stopped with me," Sciabarra said.

Sciabarra was both a teacher, then assistant principal at Brooklyn Technical High School. She went on to become principal of New Dorp High School in 1990. Then she took on the role of deputy superintendent for Staten Island and Brooklyn high schools. Under Schools Chancellor Harold Levy, Sciabarra went to headquarters. Under Chancellor Joel Klein, she helped create a centralized admissions office.

"With the high school admissions system we created it essentially broke open many of the boundaries and created much more choice for our students across the board," Sciabarra said.

Sciabarra admits with 1,700 schools, the enrollment process could be overwhelming.

"The scale of New York City is so daunting and so challenging," said Sciabarra. "In the work in student enrollment it was never about this is what it is and were finished. It was about this what we did this year how do we make it better next year. How do we reach more people."

In her career, Sciabarra has reached thousands -- particularly students -- who refer to her affectionately as Ms Sci. For many, she was their mentor and cheerleading coach.

"Right now there's a formation of a cheerleader alumni group, brand new, 200 members jumped onto to Facebook within 48 hours because they wanted to do it for Sci," said former student Susan Mayham.

Sciabarra is now back at Brooklyn Tech part-time helping the Alumni Foundation keep in touch with former students. She jokes she has thousands of kids.

"Though I don't have my own kids, I feel so fulfilled that I've had so many other children in whose lives I've meant something," Sciabarra said.
