Guitar class an instrument for teaching math, science

There's science in the strings, and Bakersfield College students are spending their summer learning all about it.

A dozen students are each building electric guitars from scratch in a summer workshop while learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. And they're personalizing the guitars because at the end of the course, those guitars are theirs to keep.

"We wanted to take science, technology, engineering and math, and make it real for people," said course instructor Steve Hageman. "It's not all about the guitar."

The first-ever, four-week class at BC is made possible through a collaborative grant between Cal State Bakersfield and the college aimed at inspiring students to pursue science careers.

It's led by BC engineering professors Hageman and Klint Rigby, who recently attended a National Science Foundation guitar building workshop and brought the idea back to Bakersfield.

For the "guitar project," students choose their eclectic guitar design, sand them, polish them, wire them and tune them, all while studying what makes them work.

Some of the students are musicians and music majors; some are aspiring engineers and mechanics; and still others are undecided about their career goals.

But they're all excited about building their very own electric guitar.

"This is on my bucket list," said David Caploe, a recent high school graduate and BC student. "Music is definitely a big part of my life."

BC inherited about $15,000 from a CSUB grant to run the summer course. The university last year received a five-year, $2.5 million grant through the U.S. Department of Education used in part to establish CSUB's first four-year engineering degree program (in computer engineering).

College officials hope the class inspires students to transfer to a four-year university like CSUB, seek science and engineering degrees and eventually work in science fields, preferably locally.

"They've brought to our community a really interesting and different way of accessing science and math," said Rageshwar Kaur Goldberg, BC's STEM program manager.

Local businesses are getting involved, too. Representatives of the local Woodworking Specialties have assisted students in the lab. On Tuesday, Ryan Fergon, a technician at the Guitar Center, showed students how to tune their guitars.

He said it's important for people to know "the science behind how things work." The class provides just that, he said.

The Public Prep Network is a nonprofit organization that develops single-sex elementary and middle public schools that pursue excellence through continuous learning and data-driven instruction. Our model is designed to empower each student to build strong character, demonstrate critical thinking, possess a core body of knowledge and be on a predictive path to earn a degree from a four-year university.

Public Prep is currently comprised of three tuition-free, all-girls charter schools. Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary, the first all-girls charter school in New York City and the inaugural school in our network, was launched in 2005 and serves 250 students in grades K-4.  Girls Prep Lower East Side Middle School and Girls Prep Bronx Elementary School are both in their second year and will add a grade level each year until reaching capacity as a 5-8

Public Prep Special Education Collaborative Team Teachers work alongside a General Education Teacher in equal partnership to consistently plan for, monitor the progress of, and be held accountable for the academic success of each of the 22-25 students in their class. The Collaborative Team Teaching pairs use a variety of co-teaching models and meet regularly with their grade-level team members and other collaborators such as the Learning Specialists, English Language Learners Specialist, and the Speech and Language Therapist in order to address all students’ access to curriculum and learning goals. All Teachers also work closely with school aides, who provide non-academic support to the team.

Clearly defined processes and structures to co-plan, co-teach, assess, and reflect with their cooperating teacher to individualize instruction and to discuss students’ access to curriculum and learning goals. Modifications, scaffolds and interventions align with a pre-designed, codified set of content standards and address students’ individual needs and learning styles. Systems that enable good stewardship of resources, i.e. collaborative processes that leverage the strength of all team members and fully utilize both teachers throughout the entire school day, maintaining records of students’ progress towards IEP goals, for communicating with families and building community with them through annual home visits and other school events, for attending IEP meetings, and for ensuring appropriate accommodations are given to students during assessments and meeting with all other service providers.
