Motorcyclist killed in crash
A White Haven man riding a motorcycle died shortly after colliding with a car in Butler Township on Sunday afternoon.
Butler Township police said the man, Michael Nagy III, 56, was driving north on state Route 309 when he collided with a vehicle operated by a woman exiting from Edge Rock Drive, coming from Beech Mountain Lakes, onto Route 309 around 12:20 p.m.
The impact caused Nagy to be thrown from the motorcycle and the car to spin, police said. Nagy was driven to Hazleton General Hospital by American Patient Transport Systems Inc., and then flown to St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem, where has was later pronounced dead.
The woman was taken to Hazleton General Hospital for a medical evaluation and charges against her are pending the investigation, which is ongoing.
A team from the Pennsylvania State police was performing forensic mapping as Butler Township police performed crash reconstruction, closing Route 309 to traffic between St. Johns Road and West and East Butler Drive until about 3:30 p.m.
Fire police from Valley Regional Fire and Rescue, Sugarloaf, Harwood and Hazle Township Fire and Rescue, directed traffic onto detours.
A second entrance to Beech Mountain, from Honey Hole Road, is not typically used by the public but was opened to detour traffic coming out of Beech Mountain.
When the call for the fatal crash was made to Butler police from Luzerne County 911, officers had a person in custody for an active warrant, so additional township officers as well as state police at Hazleton were called in to provide backup.
Valley Regional Fire's engine crew was also handling another call when the incident happened. Assistant Chief Kevin Tarapchak said the engine was setting up a landing zone at its fire house on West Butler Drive at the time for a woman that was hit by a horse, and sent the department's rescue truck to the scene of the crash along with its basic life support ambulance and an advanced life support ambulance from APTS.
While the fire department and police were on scene of the Route 309 crash, two others occurred. One occurred around 1:37 p.m. and involved a vehicle being driven off the road and down a slight embankment on St. Johns Road, Lt. Andy Morro said. He said another happened around 2:09 p.m. at Old Turnpike Road and West Butler Drive and involved three vehicles. There were no injuries reported in either, Morro said.
The other two crashes sent some police officers and firefighters to those locations from the Route 309 scene. Fire companies from Sugarloaf, Foster Township, Harwood and Hazle Township assisted Valley Regional.
