Auto racing: After years of waiting, Kentucky Speedway gets Sprint Cup race ...

The sun will have disappeared behind the trees beyond turns one and two when drivers will be told to start their engines for the Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday, but Jerry Carroll will be wearing sunglasses just the same.

Carroll is old school and won't want the crowd, which is expected to be in excess of 130,000, to see a grown man weep like a preschooler.

"It will just be a matter of how much and how long I cry," said Carroll, who built and owned the track. "I will have a different thought when I see every one of those 43 cars go around the track. It's going to be very emotional. I will break down."

The biggest sporting extravaganza to hit the state since the Kentucky Derby and University of Kentucky basketball begins with the Camping World Truck Series UNOH 225 on Thursday night and the Nationwide Series Feed the Children 300 on Friday night.

It's a time NASCAR fans in the tri-state area have yearned for since Carroll boldly announced that Kentucky was going racing in 1999. He, four partners and the state built a 1.5-mile racetrack on 1,000 acres of cow pasture and cornfields in Sparta, which is a 35-mile drive from Cincinnati.

The five men pooled $100million and the state kicked in $50million to construct a palace they thought eventually would get them on the NASCAR Winston Cup schedule.

Little did they know how much time, emotional strain and monetary sacrifice there would be to get this far.

Carroll and his team filed an antitrust suit in federal court against NASCAR in 2008 for not awarding them a Cup race. They gave up their attempts at litigation and sold the track at a hefty loss to Bruton Smith, the power-hitting president of Speedway Motorsports Inc. that owns seven other tracks, for $78million on Jan.1, 2009.

Smith, in turn, took one of two Sprint Cup dates from his Atlanta Motor Speedway and gave it to Kentucky Speedway.

It doesn't matter to Carroll that the big day will arrive without his owning the track. He is a senior consultant and people still travel Jerry Carroll Blvd. on their way to the parking lots.

"I have made a lot of money building things in my life, but not everything in life is for the almighty dollar," Carroll said. "I told my partners, 'Hey, we're not going to win this lawsuit. We're not going to the Supreme Court. We have to sell so someone else can get us into Cup racing.' This is about the state of Kentucky adding to its legacy and not us. Kentucky has to win this thing.
