There aren’t many movies that put you into a trance, or so thoroughly confuse you into a state of utter and complete awe. 2001 is responsible for startling an entire generation of filmmakers into thinking differently. But, if you’ve seen the sequel, some of them only picked out the low-hanging fruit. The final act is extremely dated, redundant, and hardly tolerable. I did not like having to see it in the park with a thousand mosquitos hovering over me, but I stayed, through the painful negative-images of desert mountains, which might have held some symbolic meaning to somebody being administered LSD by the CIA and told to write theses about random shit. That aside, Kubrick does everything imaginable to turn this film into a masterpiece. There’s no greater moment in editing history than the monkey bone seamlessly flipping into a space ship. One tool into another, a lightning rod through time and space, just like the steles serve as pinholes through the narrative. Despites its technologally antiquated bits, this movie is every bit as relevant today as it was then.
