The study group was comprised of 38 LBW-PP girls who were followed-up from age eight to 15 years; they were assigned to receive early metformin (study year: 1 - 4; age: 8 - 12 years) or late metformin (study year: 6; age: 13 - 14 years). The study endpoints were evaluated after study year seven when all participants had been untreated for one year or more. The girls randomly assigned to receive early metformin were 4 cm taller at age 15 years than those girls assigned to receive late metformin, and they also had less body fat. Compared with early-treated girls, late-treated girls had two-fold to eight-fold more hirsutism (masculine features such as hairiness), androgen excess, oligomenorrhea (irregular menses), and PCOS. At age eight to 10 years, abdominal adiposity was the first variable to differ in girls who had PCOS compared to those who did not have PCOS at age 15 years.
